Heartwarming genius - This album simply strikes all the right notes. It s folksy yet connects richly and deeply. While some of the songs can be a little sweet, it never descends to saccharine falsity - the songs stay fairly true to life. Or perhaps merely how we would like life to be. No matter. The simple fact is that this is a great album to kiss to, to roast marshmallows to, ... to simply listen to and bathe in the romance of this quiet yet great album.
Brings back respectability to the compilation CD - Oddly enough, I found out about Christine Lavin via the unlikely venue of a Detroit Classic Rock station. Every Sunday morning they have a program called Over Easy and it just so happened that Christine Lavin made the playlist last weekend. I looked her up on the internet, read about her, which eventually led me to the compilation CD that is the subject of this review. I figured it would be a safe place to start. Sure, most compilation CD s are hastily assembled creatures of economy and/or convenience. Then there s On a Winter s Night, which is a very tasteful and well thought-out compilation CD of light folksy love songs... but not insipid. Every song is introspective and touches the listener in some way. This is the kind of talent one sadly won t often hear on mainstream radio. So you have two choices, listen to public radio and wait for some of these wonderful selections to hit the air...or you can buy this CD and enjoy all this beautiful music whenever you want to.
A cozy album for any season - This is an amazing compilation by Christine Lavin and other folksy folks. I bought it three years ago and have still not tired of it...it makes you want to curl up and read by a fire with a loved one. Each song is unique but every one is wonderful. It has a mellow, quiet feeling about it- perfect for night-time. Many of the songs are bittersweet and beautiful, but the album is uplifting rather than depressing. Not every song is about love, although that is a general theme. It is full of acoustic folk music with profound lyrics and original melodies. I have given it as a gift numerous times and I m sure I will again. Anyone who likes great folk should pick up a copy!!
